Margarita-ville

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on July 6, 2010 at 4:39 pm

So let me be honest.  This post is somewhat transparently a plug for my fiance’s new business venture: Blind Pig Cocktails, a line of pre-mixed, high-quality cocktails.  I have to give him a shout-out because he was just featured in today’s Washington Post, and I’m so proud of him!  But beyond that — his flagship line includes the Jargarita, a twist on the classic marg, and an excellent source of fashion inspiration for today’s over-100-degree weather conditions.

Blind Pig Jargaritas

(It is brutal out there, and all I can think about is an icy cold, salt-rimmed margarita.  And it’s only 11 a.m.)  So why not spice things up with some lime green, margarita-inspired fashion?

How cheerful is this zesty, tiered dress (Muse, on sale for $78, Dillard’s)?  Sort of looks like the  pink-and-red parfait See by Chloe dress I was obsessed with earlier this season, only with a much slighter price tag.  Love the nautical rope detailing beneath the bust.  Pair with nothing but some unfussy white sandals (I know I’ve featured these puppies 2,123 times, but you just can’t beat ’em — K. Jacques, $245, Net-A-Porter) and a white clutch (Tory Burch, $275, Bergdorf Goodman).  Done.

Or how about this cheerful, marg-color-palette Lilly dress ($148, Lilly Pulitzer)?  Love the cut of the dress, especially when paired with some white or lucite statement jewelry, like this Anthropologie necklace ($42, Anthropologie):

Slip into some white Jack Rogers or, for something a bit dressier, go bold with these green Ralph Lauren “Finley” wedges ($281, Endless):

This green Lilly clutch would match perfectly ($98, Lilly Pulitzer):

Or, for lounging poolside (drink in hand), this awesome Milly cover-up (on sale for $142, The Outnet)?

Throw on over this neon green bikini (JETS, $110 for top and $85 for bottoms, Net-A-Porter):

Toss all your essentials into this white bucket-style carry-all (loveloveLOVE — CCSkye, on sale for $419, Zappos):

But if white leather seems a bit risky for poolside fun, opt for this more beach-appropriate straw tote (adore the style — $86, Endless):

Another splashy beachwear option?  This darling Shoshanna two-piece ($90 for top, $90 for bottom, PiperLime):

I’d wear it beneath this breezy white caftan cover-up (Diane Von Furstenberg, $141, Bluefly):

Make things a bit splashier with these nothing-but-fun Betsey Johnson aviators in lime green ($53, Zappos) or these green-and-gold thongs (Miss Me, $22, Endless):

Or maybe for a little backyard fiesta, this little Lilly has your name all over it ($202, Zappos)?

If you’re super-bold, pair with this Elva Fields necklace ($268, Elva Fields), but if that’s too much, wear the necklace separately with a solid white sundress.

You might offset the yellow this this precious rope-accented tote ($29, Endless):

p

This little Shoshanna eyelet number would look equally darling with the above statement necklace ($330, Bloomingdale’s):

You could dress it down with these lime-and-white Jack Rogers ($95, Endless) and this vintage crystal Amanda Pearl necklace ($298, Amanda Pearl):

Or some gold sandals and this Kate Spade lucite necklace ($125, PiperLime):

Or you can dress it up with these peppy little Jerome Rousseau heels (on sale for $202, The Outnet) and this multi-stone Margaret Elizabeth necklace ($138, Margaret Elizabeth):

And if you’d prefer only a little splash of green — consider this adorable little lime coin purse by Kate Spade (on sale for $42, Kate Spade):

And maybe this fun, sporty little Marc Jacobs watch ($175, Bloomingdale’s)?  I like the idea of pairing it with some slim bangles for that bold jewelry look.

Or maybe just set a citrus scent wafting through your house — this Diptyque candle is perfectly zesty ($60, Beauty Habit):

But most importantly — settle in with an icy margarita (preferably a Blind Pig Jargarita) and beat the heat in style!

The Stars and the Stripes

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Shoes, Sundresses on July 2, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Happy (early) Fourth of July!  Independence Day has got to be one of my absolute favorite days of the year.  The steamy DC heat (oddly requisite for the 4th), the outdoor BBQs, the country music, the fireworks — all things I anticipate every year.  I’m already dreaming up the perfect getups to show my true (patriotic) colors.

First, for poolside lounging, a sophisticated, simple navy blue bikini like this Melissa Odabash is right on the money ($82, The Outnet):

Tote your poolside essentials in this American flag-esque striped beach bag (on sale for $136, Tory Burch):

Go full-on Ralph Lauren Americana preppy with an menswear-inspired cover up in crisp white (Kushcush, on sale for $120,  Shopbop):

A red-and-white striped bikini would also look festive for the occasion — how precious is this little getup by French Connection ($40 for top, $33 for bottoms, Bluefly):

When you head inside for a refreshing brewski, slip into this adorable 3.1 Phillip Lim cover up (I kinda just want to buy it to wear it as a dress…) — you can find it for $250 at La Garconne — and a pair of silver t-straps ($29.50, Gap):

Protect your eyes with these red Gucci shades ($220, Nordstrom) — they’re the eyewear shape of the season:

You can also snag the sporty style from around-the-block-again brand Carerra ($120, Shopbop):

I’m also in love with the idea of layering this nautical combo bikini (Kushcush, on sale for $122, Shopbop) beneath this inexpensive Piko cover up ($30, ChickDownTown):

Perfect with the knotted DV by Dolce Vita sandals I featured yesterday ($54.95, Endless):

This little star-spangled ring might be the perfect topper (Rachel Leigh, $132, Shopbop):

Meanwhile, a patriotic combination of red and blue beach towels are ideal for laying out (Lacoste, $19 each, Macy’s), whether poolside or beneath a canopy of fireworks:

For afternoon BBQ / evening festivities, consider stepping it up with this navy eyelet dress (Kitty, $87, eDressMe):

I think it’d look beyond precious with this perfect-for-the-occasion wicker bag (Magid, $100, Endless) and white sandals (K. Jacques, $245, Net-A-Porter):

Accent with this dangling star necklace — love the idea of recycling it for later use by layering with a fistful of thin gold chains ($70, Max and Chloe):

Also lovely?  This little form-fitted Lady Liberty number ($84.99, ModCloth):

I’ve got to admit that I’m not the hugest fan of the bandage-style dress Herve Leger popularized, but there’s something fetching and demure about the variation above.  I like the idea of pairing it with this little sailor’s knot-patterned clutch ($72, eBags), but if that seems like there’s too much going on for you, try on a simple pair of straw wedges ($49.50, Swell) with this darling bow-front clutch ($35, Aldo):

Or go with classic summery white eyelet.  I love this tiered Yoana Baraschi ($197, Otte), especially when paired with these kickin wedges by Bettye Muller (on sale for $144, Neiman Marcus) and this watermelon-red-accented Tory Burch clutch ($275, Bloomingdales):

Or how about this beyond adorable, uber-flattering Theory dress ($395, Shopbop)?

Picture perfect with these drool-worthy Bruno Frisonis (on sale for $199, Yoox):

Or, if you’d rather not invest in a pair of shoes you’ll likely only wear one occasion of the year, try this precious little bag — don’t you die over it ($78, Anthropologie)?

And finally — if none of the above tickle your fancy — I love a high-waisted, full skirt (especially after yesterday’s 50s era post!) with a trim little tank and some super high wedges.  Try this striped Alice and Olivia ($165, Net-A-Porter) or this seersucker striped See by Chloe ($206, La Garconne):

Throw on a fistful of gold bangles and this delicate gold star earrings (Gorjana, $45, Shopbop):

Patriotic perfection!

Peachy Keen!

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, Work Wear on June 30, 2010 at 2:59 pm

This may disgust many of my dear readers, but my absolute favorite breakfast for several years of my childhood was a packet of Quaker instant oatmeal in the peaches & cream flavor.  So artificial, so over-sweetened — and so delicious.  I’ve since graduated (I actually don’t ever eat breakfast — not healthy, I know, but I’m just not hungry in the a.m.), but the peach-and-cream combo is as enticing then as it is now.  Who wouldn’t love to wake up to a bouquet of delicate peach-and-ivory rununculas, for example?

(Photos by Lucy Snowe — see her shoppe on Etsy.com to purchase prints)

A soft, warm blush of peach color is flattering on virtually any complexion, and I’m totally inspired to sport the hue over the course of the next few weeks of blazing mid-summer heat.  I’m particularly interested in this breezy Michael Kors caftan top (you know my obsession with the style) — snag your own on sale for $479.50 at TheOutnet:

I like the idea of pairing it with some crisp, twig-leg, ankle-cropped jeans in optic white — pick your favorite.  My favorite pair is by Joe’s Jeans, of all lines, but I’m loathe to recommend a particular cut or brand because I’ve probably tested about 342 different pairs and grimaced at every single one of them until I tried on the Joe’s.  White jeans can be immensely unflattering if they don’t fit just right.

I’d accessorize with one or two long gold necklaces — I love Carol Marie’s variations as they come in slightly different lengths and are perfect for layering ($125, Carol Marie):

And then this lovely coral-accented gold bangle by Kenneth Jay Lane ($160, Shopbop) and a simple pair of chunky, statement-making gold studs (love this versatile pair — on sale for $35, JennyBird):

I’d be reaching for this pair of gold DV by Dolce Vita sandals to boot ($55, Endless):

Other daywear options?  I’m loving this little LemLem peach-palette smocked-top dress ($215, Barney’s):

I’d pair it with these precious Cynthia Vincent for Roxy t-straps ($79, Roxy) and a roomy straw tote (Kate Spade, on sale for $236, Zappos):

Because the look is already so vibrant and multi-dimensional, forgo a lot of jewelry (I know, I know — it goes against my grain as well) and round it out with some peppy little studs.  Maybe this pair of quatrefoil/clover earrings will do the trick (Jardin, on sale for $70, Bluefly):

Alternately, consider pairing a simple crew neck tee in a fetching peach color (on sale for $19.60, J. Crew) with some crisp white shorts (the Milly pair below are no longer available, but you can find a similar version — also by Milly — for $195 at Bloomingdale’s):

You might consider throwing on your gold or white Jack Rogers to complete the look, but a pair of peppy flats adds an interesting dimension to a mid-summer look — refining the entire aesthetic a bit.  I’d opt for either these slingbacks (an affordable $36, TopShop) or these elegantly printed ballet flats ($118, J. Crew):

I’d either layer some gold necklaces (like the Carol Maries above) and add a pair of happy studs (M. Flynn, $130, Max & Chloe) —

Or I’d throw on a statement-making bib necklace — perhaps this Roberta Chiarella piece ($128, Max & Chloe)?

I like the idea of a tone-on-tone necklace-to-shirt look.  Finish with very tiny studs or pearls or…gasp…nothing!  If you’re headed to the beach, you can remain peachy — J. Crew has the perfect polka dot bikini for you ($44 for bottoms, $29 for tops, J. Crew):

Throw on a white cover-up and you’re ready to go.  Otherwise, wear a white bikini with this darling TopShop tunic/dress, which I’d like to use as a cover-up ($58, TopShop):

Ohsocute and Sienna Miller-esque when paired with some nondescript brown leather t-straps and some Wayfarers.  Alternately, cover up with the immensely popular Jen’s Pirate’s Booty (yes, that’s the name of the brand) “poncho” — the ever-glam Alessandra Ambrosio has been spotted in it and you can snap up your own for $122 at Singer22:

For a different (more date-ready) look centered around a peach palette, consider mixing shades of coral, salmon, peach, and white for a perfect summer look.  Start with this vibrantly-hued dress — like this DAY Birger et Mikkelsen knockout (on sale for $137, The Outnet) or the Amanda Uprichard “Joan” dress in salmon ($194, PiperLime):

Add this Wendy Mink quartz cluster bracelet ($170, Wendy Mink Jewelry), some simple gold studs, and a pair of dusty peach heels (the first — $150, Kurt Geiger; the second — $636, ShopSavannahs):

For a bit more festive look, you could also go in a slightly BRIGHTER direction, avoiding the dusty peaches and soft mixed quartz stones and instead pairing the dresses above with these cheerful little David Aubrey earrings ($58, Kitson):

The earrings would also look fantastic with this linen sweetheart neckline strapless number ($198, J.Crew):

Pair with some gold-accented wedges, like these Charles Davids (on sale for $124, Zappos):

and make sure you tuck this YSL peach-toned gloss ($30, Saks) into your little gold clutch ($155, Tory Burch)!

Or maybe you’re getting seriously dolled up  — check out ever-sophisticated Audrey Hepburn in her peach-colored dream of an evening look for inspiration:

Then consider slipping into this ridiculous one-shouldered Halston Heritage number (SJP wore it in Sex and the City II — $325, Net-A-Porter):

Imagine wearing it with your hair up and these bank-breaking diamond and moonstone danglers (Divya, $3,000, Max & Chloe):

High end meets recessionista cool when you pair the above stunners with this lovely TopShop flower ring ($40, TopShop):

Then you’d just need some simple gold high-heeled sandals, a tiny gold clutch, and a peach-hued manicure (the color below: “Cool-Lots” by Essie — $8, Drugstore.com).  To.die.for.

Get seriously into the color by primping for the night in a vintage-inspired, peach-colored teddy ($60, TopShop):

You may even want some glam mules — I’m in love with these peach-colored Giuseppe Zanottis (on sale for $349, Bluefly):

Don’t forget to powder yourself with this retro-cool puff ($54, BeautyHabit), dotting on a little of Benefit’s Georgia Peach blush (my mom’s favorite — $28, Benefit):

And while we’re in the mood for indulgence, make sure to pour yourself a bellini (champagne and peach puree — my lovely bridesmaids and I enjoyed them on the train up to NYC for my bachelorette party, and nothing could be more festive).

For work, why not wear your white suit (Miss Slick, you know you have it ready and waiting — wear it!) or a white, work-appropriate dress (the gorgeous little threaded-pattern version below is by Fendi, on sale for $425, MyTheresa) with a peaches-and-cream statement necklace (love this Hive & Honey design, $34, PiperLime) and a pair of dusty peach patent wedges (die over this pair by Pour La Victoire — on modest sale for $202 at Zappos):

And leave all your co-workers drooling with envy when you roll up with this wow-worthy peach-toned Michael Kors bag ($448, Bloomingdale’s):

Peachy keen!

Crab Feasts and Clam Bakes

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on June 28, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Over the weekend, I enjoyed my first crab feast of the season — one of the true delights of a D.C. / Maryland / Northern Virginia summers.  We spread out newspaper, steamed two bushels of blue crabs we’d picked up from the Maine Street fish market, doused them in Old Bay, and dug in.  Nothing could be better.

Most of the girls at the event (myself included) wore breezy sundresses to compete with the stifling June weather we’ve been having (upper 90s and what feels like 100% humidity — it’s stagnant out there).  Something like the Trina Turk Lucia dress in eyelet would be right on the money ($268, Nordstrom), although a bit dangerous given how dirty you get when you’re picking through crabs.

(Nonetheless, several of the girls wore white.  It’s OK to be impractical every now and then.)  Perfect with orangey-red nails (the Essie color below is aptly titled “ClamBake” — $8, Essie Shop) and a pair of nautical-inspired orangey-red wedges ($79.95, Steve Madden):

Love the sort of rough-spun, faded look of the wedges above, though I bought a pair of more finished looking tangerine-red wedges from Sassanova yesterday that are a tad more polished and oh-so-versatile (work, play, whatever!)

Another option for your summer seafood soiree?  This crab red eyelet dress ($65, Modcloth):

How adorable with a classic canvas tote (Tommy Hilfiger, $65, Endless) and some white Jack Rogers?

Alternately, go the cheeky route and try on these fun little Moschino crab sandals ($245, Sassanova):

Given the heat, shorts would also be a stellar option.  I love the deep azur blue of these upscale linen Cavalli shorts ($231, TheOutnet):

Pair with a white eyelet Cynthia Steffe top (on sale for $109, Bluefly):

I like the idea of adding some coral accents — maybe this chunky beaded bracelet (Carolee, $150, Bloomingdale’s):

Or this amazing gold toggle version by KEPDesigns ($225, KEPDesigns):

Both would look incredible with some simple gold studs, like these adorable sand dollar studs ($200, also by KEPDesigns):

If you’re dining seaside, consider layering a nautical bikini like this frilly little set by Undrest ($100 for top, $105 for bottoms, Net-A-Porter):

Wear beneath a crisp white eyelet cover up ($118, Anthropologie):

Alternately, wear beneath a striped, boat-neck tee (Day by Malene Birger, $100, Net-A-Porter) and a pair of crisp, sailor-inspired shorts (on sale for $41.99, French Connection):

Perfect with either some classic Sperry boat shoes ($79, Bloomingdale’s) or the Kate Spade Ines knot sandal in gold ($225, TheShoeBox):

Top it off with some gold anchor earrings ($175, KEPDesigns):

You might also consider a little navy-trimmed eyelet top (love the boxy fit of this shirt in particular — very Kate Spade –$34.99, Modcloth) with this sailor-detailed short denim skirt (Armand Basi, on sale for $90, TheOutnet):

If you’re into the nautical look as much as I am, you might consider outfitting your home with a few seaside decorations.  I’ve collected some marine life-inspired pillows over the years from Pottery Barn, but I’m in love with the vintage styling on these Thomas Paul pillows ($80 for the boat sketch version, 2BModern; $70 for the anchor version, 2BModern):

This retro-style wall hanging is also ideal in a galley kitchen ($159, Ballard Designs):

And how adorable are these little silver-plated critters ($28-$68, Williams Sonoma Home):

Anchors aweigh!

A Nice Little Saturday

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on June 8, 2010 at 6:42 pm

So I woke up at 6:53 a.m. on Saturday morning and could not return to sleep.  When I got up to start my day seven minutes of tossing and turning later, I realized that I have officially left “young adulthood” / “early 20s” and moved into “older person” territory.  Not necessarily a bad thing — just a new development.  The early rise meant that I had precious extra hours to soak up the early summer day.  Perfect for hitting up the local farmer’s market and delighting in the freshness of the produce with my fiance.

(image courtesy of A Creative Mint’s stimulating, excellently styled blog)

Inspired by Madewell’s recent eShop launch and the casual-cool vibe their current collection projects, I dreamt up a laidback Farmers-Market-early-Saturday-morning-stroll outfit.  (You’ll notice that everything in this post is under $200 — and most well under $100.  I’ve received a number of urgent requests for more affordable fare, so I’ll be trying to stay budget-friendly for at least a couple of posts a month…but a girl’s got to dream!)  For the Saturday morning market, I was thinking an easy breezy little eyelet dress ($148, Madewell) and some strappy flat sandals ($98, Madewell):

I like the idea of accessorizing with some chunky wood jewelry (fits the whole organic food / close-to-the-earth Farmer’s Market deal).  Maybe this Jones New York necklace ($55, Jones New York)?

For more of a Parisian-chic “marche en plein air” look, check out this precious navy-and-white combo dress ($98, Anthropologie):

Pair with some open-weave white flats — these “knotted” Belle by Sigerson Morrisons are chic given the nautical trend this season (on sale for $154, Bloomingdale’s):

Alternately, check out these Parisian-chic peep-toe flats by Steve Madden  ($89, Steve Madden):

And, if you’re really unbuttoned-cool, I’m kind of loving the idea of these easy-on canvas Tory Burch flats ($95, Bergdorf Goodman):

Pair with a navy eyelet top by the one-and-only Shoshanna (on sale for $56, Bluefly):

and some crisp white shorts (below, by Milly, but you can find a range of styles from J. Crew at a better price point):

You might also consider these precious Milly chain-link shorts ($185, Net-A-Porter):

Don’t forget a roomy straw shopper for your purchases.

They’re all over the place this season, but I love the rustic style and oversized rope handles on this little Magid version ($78, Nordstrom):

While on the subject of roping, how about this awesome one-of-a-kind necklace ($129, Habitat Shoes):

Don’t you die over it!?  I imagine pairing it with a simple strapless navy dress or this little slub jersey tank dress in sailor-chic navy stripes ($39.50, Gap):

I’m also kind of head over heels for this dressed-up t-shirt dress by Madewell (their stuff is just what I want to wear on a lazy Saturday — $88, Madewell):

Pair with strappy gold or brown gladiators (below, Seychelles, on sale for $36 at 6pm):

You know I’m daydreaming about pairing the look with the Chloe It Bag of my dreams (“The Marcie”):

But you might opt for a straw shopper like the Magid above or this Free People straw-and-rope tote ($48, Free People):

If you like a look with a bit more structure and polish, you’d beat the heat in this crisp white poplin number (on sale for $119, ShopAdam):

Pair with some enorma-shades (below — Marc by Marc Jacobs, $85, Nordstrom) and a structured straw tote (the one below — Serpui Marie, $110, Endless):

Add on some splashy espadrilles — I’m in love with this punchy Oscar de la Rentas on sale for an OMG-worthy $158 at FootCandyShoes:

Alternately, if you’d prefer to stick with the nautical trend I’ve been featuring above, slip into these kicky Bettye Mullers (on sale for $144, Neiman Marcus):

The perfect companion piece that will take you from farmer’s marketing to your next door neighbor’s BBQ!

Addendum

Sorry to have posted this two days into the week — just when you feel furthest from your lazy Saturday.  (Sort of cruel.)  I’ve been overbooking myself — I’m two months out (almost to the day) from the wedding and I’m currently consumed by searching for an apartment for my fiance and I!  Busy times.  Bear with me!

Copacabana

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on June 4, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Brazil has become a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry over the past few years.  The Oi Fashion Rocks show that took place in Rio de Janeiro last October had everyone atwitter (drawing a crowd of 5,000 and Big Name designers like Givenchy and Marc Jacobs) — and let’s not forget that Brazil is where Gisele Bundchen and Alessandra Ambrosio hang their hats.  But even without the recent buzz, Brazil and its fashions have always been affiliated with a certain vividness — a festiveness — and an open-armed joie de vivre.  Let’s toast to that copacabana livelihood by throwing on some vibrant prints and downing a few caipirinhas!

($12.90, Heritage1981)

We’ll begin by jet-setting down to the center of Brazilian culture and fashion: Rio de Janeiro.  Embrace the national colors with this jolly green Tibi dress (on sale for $200, Net-A-Porter):

(Love the racerback — check it out.)  Perfect for afternoon shopping or for throwing on over your itty-bitty bikini (we are, after all, in Brasilia):

The set above is by Tiger Lily ($149, Tiger Lily), and it’s skimpy enough to make Gisele proud.  Add a pair of sporty-cool shades to the mix — you know I’m obsessed with Carreras, which come in a range of festive colors and ring in at around $125 a pop, but you can get the look for much less with this $10/a pop 80s Purple version ($10, 80s Purple):

(Also comes in sunny yellow, hot pink, and a few other electric-cool hues.)  For daywear, pair a punchy little asymmetrical top (the one below is by comeback queen Halston Heritage — on sale for $171, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with some white cut-offs.  I know, I know.  Cut-offs?!  Those are permissible beyond 8th grade summer camp?  In this case, yes.  Little Alessandra Ambrosio has been seen all over town in her Siwy cut-offs, and they just seem appropriate.  These Current/Elliotts ($145, Net-A-Porter) are perfect:

Kick it up a notch with this vibrant beaded statement necklace by my favorite costume jewelry designer, nOir ($198, Kitson) — I’m bananas over it!

If BIG jewelry isn’t your thing, swap the necklace out for this pom-pommed pair of sandals by Lanvin (on sale for $349, Barney’s):

And add this cheerful embroidered tote ($48, Mia Reva) to store all your shopping finds:

Lazy afternoon drinks on the veranda?  I’m loving the idea of an easy maxi dress in a vibrant palette.  Consider this T-Bags in eye-pleasing royal blue (on sale for $203, Net-A-Porter):

Alternately, I might reach for this aptly named “Sao Paolo” maxi by Tibi ($398, Saks):

I think it’d look smashing with these David Aubrey coral baubles ($58, Kitson):

Or you might consider pairing a breezy, peppily-printed caftan or tunic with some crisp white jeans and jeweled sandals.  I’m loving this Pucci caftan ($558, The Outnet) with these J. Crew “Matchstick” jeans ($98, J. Crew):

These yellow-stone sandals by Mystique would round out the look nicely ($150, Mystique):

Don’t forget your too-cool-for-school supermodel aviators (Carrera, $145, Kitson):

You’d look just as fetching pairing your skinny white jeans with this festival of a palm frond top by Milly ($213, Revolve Clothing):

Pair with these vibrant green wedges by Ralph Lauren ($375, Endless):

If that’s too much of a color commitment for you (how often do you wear green?), a crisp white or a hot pink would be solid options as well.

This brings us to our next point:  if you’re enjoying the caipirinha I mentioned earlier (Brazil’s national cocktail!  — made of cachaca, sugar, and lime), you might want to dress in refreshing green to match anyway!

Try this zesty Milly (on sale for $318, Net-A-Porter):

Love the beaded neckline.  I’d pair with some of-the-moment white t-straps ($69, Steve Madden):

Add on this little green woven straw clutch by Serpui Marie ($71, Endless):

Evening out at the copacabana?  I got you covered.  How about this vacationista coral frock by Jets by Jessika Allen ($220, Net-A-Porter)?

Slip into some bold, festive footwear — these Louboutins ($509, Barneys) have been on my lust list forever, but I’m also crazy about these lace-up cha-cha-cha espadrilles in punchy geranium by Kate Spade ($225, Endless):

Alternately, inspired by the gold-adorned reinas of the carneval (a HUGE annual festival in Brazil before Easter), how about some glitzy gold shoes (below, $140, Ted Baker)?

And maybe a whimsical little flower to tuck behind your ear or pin to your clutch ($35 for set of 2, Ban.do):

Accent the shape of the silk flower with this precious gold ruffle cocktail ring ($55, ByBoe):

You can either wear a simple gold clutch (hard case might be best given the flowiness of your dress) or test out this splashy little thing ($78, Anthropologie):

Other evening wear options?  I know it’s black-and-white, but something about this print is just so…BRASILIA! (Diane Von Furstenberg, $385, Net-A-Porter):

Add some punchy heels — these Ted Bakers are picture perfect ($95, Ted Baker):

Be sure to coordinate with your Essie nailpolish — the color below is called “Life Saver” ($8, Essie Shop):

I’d probably pair with a streamlined (don’t want to compete with the bold shoulder of the dress) yet statement-making long clutch ($195, Kate Spade):

Saude! (Cheers, in Portuguese!)

Europa!

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Shoes, Sundresses on June 1, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Sorry for the delay in posting — along with the rest of the Eastern seaboard, I headed to the Delaware beaches for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.  One of the little ladies on my trip is Europe-bound in a matter of days, and had asked: “What do I wear for a three-week tour of Western Europe?”  How does an American avoid looking like…well, an American?  I have a couple of “do’s” and “don’t”s I’ll go over prior to cherry-picking some must-haves.

1.  Avoid tourist gear.  Likely intuitive for most of you, but I would be remiss if I didn’t include this no-no.  “Tourist gear” includes white sneakers, fanny packs, cameras-around-the-neck, stiff-brimmed baseball caps, and t-shirts with group names plastered all over them.  Fairly obvious.  (And that includes you, Carrie Bradshaw.)

2.  Less obvious: avoid shorts.  Europeans tend to wear shorts only at the beach or resort and — occasionally — when involved in some sort of athletic activity, which is (at least in my experience) fairly rare.  Wear pants somewhat sparingly as well — skinny-leg jeans and cigarette pants are permissible (the JBrands below are my absolute favorite pair of jeans — $180, Net-A-Porter), but you won’t see much bootleg over there.  My fiance just returned from a trip to the Baltic States and reported that all the girls were wearing dhoti pants (much to his confusion — he also called them “weird, super-low-crotch pants”).  I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m thinking this might be  a trend to skip, regardless of how fashion-forward you’d like to appear to native Europeans.

3.  Layer, layer, layer.  This was the first thing I learned from French women when I lived abroad.  So many of them have this magic ability to layer on seemingly mismatched light separates, look fabulous and “together,” and still look unfussy.  I would reach for lots of breezy, somewhat loose-fitting separates, including gauzy scarves (adore the Franco Ferrari  scarf below — $138, La Garconne), drapey light cotton sweaters, and so forth.

4.  Lean towards the neutrals.  This is somewhat subjective, I suppose, but I always felt a bit more under-the-radar / a bit less American when I wore neutrals abroad.  (Check out the utilitarian-chic dress by Zero and Maria Cornejo below — $414, La Garconne.)  When my fiance landed in Lyon, he wore preppy pastel polos, madras shorts, nantucket red pants, and so forth — and stuck out in a major way.  (Insert looks of confusion upon the brow-knitted faces of French women — “oh, la…qu’est-ce que c’est, ca?”)  I love that he fearlessly rocked his personal getup there, but if you’re looking for ways to blend in, I’d suggest leaving your candy-colored polo dress collection at home.

And now for some creme-de-la-creme fashion picks — the things I’d want to bring if I were headed abroad.  For daytime museum-going and sight-seeing?  This uber-chic, very of-the-moment, ladylike black romper ($78, TopShop):

Pair with killer fringed black sandals (or any other strappy gladiators will do).  These Sigerson Morrisons are bananas ($425, La Garconne):

Pair with enorma-shades (below, by Oliver Peoples) or classic Ray Bans:

I’d just as readily throw on this little nautical-inspired number ($69, Mango):

Something about it is just off-kilter enough to make it more Parisian chic than Nantucket preppy.  Pair with some nonchalant-cool brown leather sandals (these are also by Mango — $79, Mango):

Add on a quirky-cool cross-body studded bag ($128, J. Crew):

(If you’re uncertain about the cross-body style, just tie the strap shorter and wear under the arm.)  Alternately, throw on some versatile gray snakeskin flats (these are by House of Harlow — $178, Shopbop):

And add a lightweight, soft gray crinkle cardigan (this one by Splendid — $92, PiperLime):

I like the idea of off-setting the crisp white fabric with shades of soft gray — you might even pile on this lovely greige carry-all by JPK Paris (on sale for $129, Nordstrom):

Alternately, go Audrey Hepburn chic in a Breton-striped shirt.

You can find them all over the place, but I’m loving this cashmere-blend Theory version for a cooler afternoon cafe stop (on sale for $140, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with cropped black cigarette pants (or jeans — these are the J Brands featured earlier) and tidy little black flats ($245, London Sole) for a literal look:

Even though I very much prefer the ladylike to the edgy, I’d consider roughing the look up a bit with this biker-chic Rebecca Minkoff ($575, Rebecca Minkoff):

Chic-ly unexpected.  For those of you who prefer to “color within the lines” (I’m there with ya most of the time), this gold-accented Kate Spade lovely would be ideal and super-versatile (on sale for $316, Zappos):

I’d probably wind up sticking to slightly-off-beat printed dresses, however.  I love this little Dolce Vita “Delilah” dress ($165, Dolce Vita):

Pair with these little white flats by Bloch ($185, Net-A-Porter) or kickin flat espadrilles by Paloma Barcelo ($180, Net-A-Porter):

Check out Dolce Vita’s dress shop for alternative Euro-chic options.

These are just some pointers to help you get packin’ for your trip across the pond.  The bottom line is that you can get away with a lot in Europe, but you’re safest with layered neutrals, comfy flats for sight-seeing, and slightly off-kilter, nearly-vintage prints.  BON VACANCES!

Haute Hippie

In Accessories, Shoes, Sundresses on May 27, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Any music festival goers out there? Coachella (huge annual music festival that takes place in Indio, CA) concluded a few weeks back, and I just read that Bonnaroo is coming up in two weeks (June 10-13 in Tennessee).  Both had/have killer line ups.  Jay-Z?  Yes please.

(Read more about Bonnaroo at their official site.)  And while Bonnaroo is no Lilith Fair (earthy-crunchy and lots of embittered women on stage — no offense), there’s a certain “free spirit” that defines the music festival experience and encourages even the preppiest amongst us (myself included) to test drive something a bit more unbuttoned.  I’ll admit that my interest in the haute hippie look is newfound.  Something about the entire aesthetic began to appeal to me in the last year or so, after dutifully observing the meteoric ascension of Nicole Richie (and her I-can’t-stop-watching transformation over the past few years), Kate Hudson, and Kate Bosworth into fashionista-ville.  So we’ll look to them for guidance.   Let’s begin with Bosworth because — as you likely know from the photos of her canoodling with Alex Sarsgaard — she attended Coachella this past April.

Um, hello.  When did Kate Bosworth begin inching towards icon status?  These looks are timeless boho chic, and I’m kind of bananas over them.  Nothing too kitschy or rehearsed — she even pulls off the headpiece without looking silly.  Of course, we can’t all be so lucky.  I’d tone it down in a couple of ways.  First, I’d feminize the aesthetic with a ditsy floral dress.  Thanks to Rebecca Taylor (see first image below), they “ditsy” print has been all over the place this season — check out this affordable BCBGeneration frock ($108, Zappos):

Pair with some worn-in brown leather boots.  Below, you’ll find my favorites — Loeffler Randall’s modified cowboy (on sale for a a still pricey $507 at Shopbop) — but for those of you looking for something a bit edgier, the Fryes have a lived-in, motorcycle-cool vibe ($278, Zappos):

Throw on a pair of aviators (Ray Bans or these Marc by Marc Jacobs — $110, Nordstrom — should do the trick) and plait a mini-braid to the side, a la Rachel Bilson.

Other “ditsy floral” options to check out: Mine’s version ($78, Otte NYC) or the queen of calico florals herself, Rebecca Taylor ($325, Pink Mascara):

If you’re lukewarm on the micro-floral print (it took me awhile to come around myself — I spotted a Theory dress bearing the print last summer that was on sale for about 70% off at Neiman’s and I just couldn’t make up my mind), I’d pair the above boots with a sweet little boho denim dress (the first below is by Trina Turk — shockingly, given her Palm Beach chic aesthetic — $268, Revolve Clothing; the second is by Lover — $405, Net-A-Porter):

I’d pair either with the brown leather boots above or — if you dare — these fringed, slouchy suedes ($268, Free People):

Now, don’t turn up your nose too quickly: celebs from Nicole Richie and Rachel Bilson to Lauren Conrad and Kate Moss have been seen in fringed boots, possibly explaining the curious ubiquity of the Minnetonka line.

The Minnetonka brand has been around for over 60 years, and has remained a mainstay in summer-camp-gear and boho-chic closets for the duration.  Snap up your own pair for $106 at Zappos.

(Richie was so enamored of the look, she incorporated several moccasin styles in this season’s House of Harlow collection.  You can buy your own at Shopbop.)  If the boots are a bit much for you, stick with a standard leather version and toughen your look with a fringed, slouchy bag (Madewell, $198, Shopbop):

It’d also look killer cool with a short white tee dress like this LNA number (on sale for $49, Shopbop)

Because the dress is so..brief and airy, I think I might opt for a strappy sandal over the boot.  This Loeffler Randall has been on my “item to watch” list the entire season (meaning that I might contemplate purchase if it drops in price).  If you gotta have it, you can get it now for $395 at the Loeffler Randall eBoutique:

I dream about pairing them with my “It” bag, the Chloe Marcie bag ($1,465, Neiman Marcus):

For something a bit more “dressed up,” consider this gauzy white cotton number by Free People (that’s as close as I’ll get to the crochet knit — sorry, Bosworth — $128, Free People):

You might consider tying a broken-in brown leather belt around your waist.  I love the label “Linea Pelle” for this sort of thing — the “criss cross” style from their vintage collection is uber-cool and lived-in looking ($163 in either “vintage whisky” or “vintage cognac,” Linea Pelle):

Top it all off with this hippie-chic Vita Fede leather wrap bracelet ($65, Max and Chloe) and a pair of festival-cool shades (Carrera, $120, Nordstrom):

If you’re looking for something with a bit more structure, how chic would you look beating the heat in this little Loeffler Randall romper ($325, Loeffler Randall)?

(Linea Pelle also has some awesome skinny belts — check them out here.)  The hipster, music-fest-goer thing to do?  Top it all off with a panama hat.  I’m a little intimidated by these, but Anne Hathaway wore panama hats both days of the Coachella festival and still looked ladylike:

And two of my Magpie Mavens have been seen sporting the look as well (R-Bils and R-Withs):

See?  Not so scary.  Reese proves anything can look polished with the right accoutrements.  Test it out with this J. Crew version ($58, J. Crew):

You might pair the hat and romper with these eye-catching Kelsi Daggers, which are apparently selling out or extremely popular at a number of online purveyors ($93, Zappos):

Layer with a utility-style anorak for bonus points — the one below is by Current/Elliott and available for $253 at Shopbop:

However, as mentioned multiple times in previous posts (sorry if I’m beating this into the ground, but when I’m bananas about a style, I can’t help but think of the millions of ways to use it!), J. Crew’s “Caprice” is right on the money (on sale for $89, J. Crew):

I bought mine awhile back and have gotten a ton of use out of it — it’s super lightweight and perfect over just about anything, from gym-wear to cute little dresses.  It’d look Bonnaroo-ready when paired with a denim utility shirt ($78, J. Crew), some white skinnies (below by JBrand), and the Rebecca Minkoff “Mac Clutch” ($330, Rebecca Minkoff — I. want. it.):

Round the look out with a pair of chic t-straps (Cocobelle, $99, Skimp Couture):

Or maybe you’re ready to give some mocs a try?  These Minnetonkas are classic ($45, Zappos), although the snakeskin texture of the House of Harlows add interest ($178, Bloomie’s):

And, for those prepsters out there that are interested in the look but can’t bear to muss up the pristine and put-together aesthetic, these J. Crew mocs should do the trick ($110, J. Crew):

With that same demographic in mind, I’ll conclude with a music-festival-appropriate-outfit for the opposite-of-hippie magpie.  Simply pair a bracelet-sleeved Tucker blouse (which looks insta-femme when tucked into a high-waisted white skirt with some pumps — $280, Net-A-Porter) with some slightly frayed straight-leg jeans (Blank Denim, on sale for $58, Piper Lime), and some twisted-leather t-straps ($88, J. Crew):

I’d keep it feminine with another Rebecca Minkoff treasure — “The Morning After” tote ($550, Muse Ten):

Bottom line: there are ways of taking the look and making it your own so it’s not quite so…textbook.  You don’t need to reincarnate Woodstock to make an (on-point and enviable) fashion statement.  Rock on!

Don’t forget to vote on what you want to see in future Magpie posts — see yesterday’s posting to voice your opinion!

No Shrinking Violet

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on May 25, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Is there any softer, more ladylike flower than the lilac?  If you’re lucky enough to live around lilac bushes, you’ll see them bloom in the next few weeks (they peak in late spring to early summer).

For those of us without daily exposure to the elements (or at least without exposure to areas of the world in which lilac bushes grow), the color has been in full blossom in the retail world for the past few months.  I don’t know about you, but I just can’t get enough of the dainty hue.  It instantly softens and yet enriches your look.  Consider, for example, this to-die-for 3.1 Philip Lim dress ($725, Blue and Cream):

I previously featured the same dress in an oatmeal linen color, but — don’t you die over this shade?  It’s unexpectedly feminine for the nearly utilitarian style of the dress.  J. Crew’s “Watercolor Garden Bridget Dress” ($285, J. Crew — the dress color is aptly titled “Lilac”) speaks much to the same point: an otherwise rather unfussy design is instantly softened and feminized with the violet palette:

You’d look delightfully ladylike in either of the above, especially if you opt to pair with some sparkling enorma-studs ($160, Ylang23):

For daywear, how about this lavender tiered chiffon tank by Kensie ($78, Piper Lime)?

It would look fresh with a pair of white cropped jeans and some unexpected flats (the ones below — on sale for $89, J. Crew):

While on the subject of fancy footwear: while it may seem dangerous or even reckless to invest in a pair of lavender shoes (how much use will you really get out of them?), I’d like to note that I snagged a pair of J. Crew Mollies in a lavender print and have worn them with innumerable outfits.  They look precious with a little lavender top but I’ve also used them to spruce up ivory/white/nudes.  Mr. Louboutin came out with a variety of styles in lovely lilac, but I’m loving these classic pumps by Elie Tahari:

I’d been eying them for awhile on Zappos but they appear to have sold out.  I believe you might have some luck shopping around in brick and mortar stores for them.  Alternately, take a look at J. Crew’s Pippa Peep Toe in “Dusty Lilac” — on sale for $149.  For the bolder out there, these Casadei double-platforms are ridiculous (on sale for 50% off or $322 at FarFetch):

You might pair with a sleek-and-demure cut sheath dress with oversized epaulettes for a Victoria Beckham streamlined look.  Something like this pale violet Valentino might work well ($576, TheOutnet):

For something a bit more toned down, how adorable is this little t-shirt dress by super-trendy brand MinkPink (Shopbop started to carry it, so you know it’s hot):

Snap it up for a recessionista-chic $62 at Pink Mascara.  Lovely.  It’d be perfect for work with some gray or violet pumps, but just as chic for gallery-going in some brown leather gladiators (for the boho look) or polished flats.  Erdem’s upscale variation on the blossoming lilac print would be just as charming (on sale for $396, The Outnet):

A just-as-pretty alternative to the real deal:

If you wanted to spruce up either, consider layering on this eye-catching Malene Birger bib ($260, Saks):

Though it’s bold by design, the white-on-blush palette leaves it remarkably feminine.  I adore it.  For just a little unexpected pop of color, I love the Longchamp in lilac ($125, Saks):

Don’t forget to stow a little lavender-shaded umbrella in case of spring rainfall ($28, Nordstrom):If you’re lucky enough to judge the showers, this happy little sundress by Calypso might be just the ticket for anything from an afternoon BBQ to a baby shower (also comes in a lovely soft daffodil color — $165, Calypso):

For great layering separates, check out J. Crew — they have all kinds of items in soothing lavender, from little brown-tipped cardigans and flats to this bright lilac tunic ($69.50, J. Crew):

Throw it over a white bikini and sport with a big straw hat at the beach or add to some white jeans and a big fabric beaded necklace.  If you’re into color-contrasting, you might even try the Stella & Dot “Uma” silk beaded necklace I raved about last week ($49, Stella and Dot):

Love.  It.  To conclude — because lavender has traditionally been used aromatherapeutically for its calming effects — let’s take the shade to the bedroom.  Accent with this soothingly-shaded lilac pillow by Thomas Paul (only $36 at Bluefly — and his pillows typically retail at $100 apiece!):

Decorate with this eye-catching print that Miss Big City (amazing, impeccable taste) pointed me toward ($29.50 unframed, closer to $100 with frame at Keep Calm Gallery):

The print pretty much speaks for the color itself: keep calm.

Addendum:  You may have noticed that my site got a little face-lift and now features my new logo (!) and a different color scheme.  Bear with me as I work out the kinks in the adjustments — it may take a few days to have everything as I need it.  Thanks for flying by!

Miami Vice

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on May 24, 2010 at 2:04 pm

I’m so into neon right now.  And I’m also into white — white blazers over little dresses, crisp white shorts with flowy blouses, white bikinis with colorful accent pieces.  Put the two together, and welcome yourself to Miami.

Let’s begin with the ubiquitous, multi-purpose white blazer.  I’m thrilled to announce that Shopbop has restocked its inventory of Madewell’s Cotton Garcon blazer — it’s surprisingly affordable, pleasantly fitted (I’m petite and mine fits snugly), and pitch-perfect for the season ($135, Shopbop):

(If you need any further proof of its coolness factor, just know that Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted in one.  Done and done.)  I like the idea of throwing it on over a bright minidress like this Karina Grimaldi ($181, Shopbop):

The back is just plain hot:

I’d accent with a jet black patent clutch — something like this Ted Baker kiss-lock version would be just right ($85, Nordstrom):

You could also pair the blazer with some white shorts and a blousey top and heels for a Kourtney Kardashian-in-Miami look.  Consider, for example, this punchy printed halter ($88, French Connection), a pair of tailored white shorts (try J. Crew for a pair similar to the $495 Michael Kors pair below — on sale for $29; Milly also has a more expensive, nautical-inspired version available for $195 at Bergdorf Goodman), and some nearly-neon (or full-on neon, if you dare) pumps.

The bold pumps above (so similar to Christian Louboutin’s “hyper prive” style) are by Schutz ($190, Cusp).  I can’t decide if I’d feel self-conscious sporting the heavy platform during the day — sure, you could get away with it in Miami, but — where else?  Tone it down a bit without sacrificing the “neon cool” by pairing the look above with some t-straps.  K. Jacques would be perfect for the occasion (on sale for only $51 at Chickdowntown!)

Several of you have articulated concern about the ankle strap situation with these kinds of shoes.  I hear ya.  Stick with flip-flops if the t-straps are going to drive you crazy (this clementine-colored pair — also by K. Jacques — is available on sale for $93 at MyTheresa):

Before we digress too far afield from Ms. Kourtney K (I am oddly fascinated by her, and I’m not typically a celebrity-follower), take a quick look at her master-of-Miami wardrobe — she’s got her finger on the pulse in terms of how to look cool in the flashy fashion capital of the world:

Love the graphic wrap skirt above — its by Factory by Erik Hart.  It appears to be sold out online, but the dress version is still up for purchase at a reasonable $127 (Revolve Clothing).  Kourtney tends to pair her Miami brights with gold accents and accessories — get the look with some oversized gold-trim shades (these are by Dior — $385, Bloomingdale’s) and a heavy gold watch (the one below by Michael Kors, $244, Zappos):

You gotta bring the bling in South Beach.  This black-faced Pedre would also be a cool choice — I snapped it up on super sale a season or two ago by piling on some coupon codes at Revolve Clothing, and you can find it on sale too ($74, Amazon):

I wear it irregularly — I deploy it only when I need to find just the right balance of masculinity/femininity — but it always draws compliments.

If you’re more in the market for Miami beachwear, have I got some finds for you!  (And no, you don’t need to bare it all to fit into the scene!)  First — a lime green / electric yellow Thayer brand bikini ($165, Shopbop).   How chic?

If the thought of neon yellow against your skin makes your hair crawl (let’s face it, some colors are better left to the naturally-tanned), I’m equally as amped about this hot pink Melissa Odabash (only $66 at The Outnet!):

Pair either suit with a breezy white caftan — you know I’m a fan of Calypso’s styles, but this 3.1 Philip Lim has weaseled its way onto my label lust list ($250, Net-A-Porter):

Adore the shell detailing along the waist.  It’d look equally as perfect atop a brightly patterned bikini, like the Emilio Pucci print ($570, Net-A-Porter) below:

Like the idea of the peppy print but can’t bear the idea of coughing up close to $600 for swimwear?  This recessionista-chic Roxy bikini is appropriately loud and yet far from cheap-looking ($40 for the top, $42 for the bottom — Roxy):

Throw on some glossy black enormashades (the ones below are by Oliver Peoples), a big-brimmed black hat ($44, Zappos), and tuck all your beach necessities in your neon-accented See by Chloe tote ($195, Shopbop):

If you’d prefer to cover up a bit as you lay out, consider the ever-chic pareo.

Spring for this luxe Pucci version in one of their classic, eye-catching prints ($540, Net-A-Porter):

But an inexpensive version in a sheer black will probably be far more versatile ($27, Nordstrom) — not to mention more wallet-friendly:

For after-hours fun, there are some to-die-for BRIGHT cocktail dresses that would totally bring the heat.

To begin with — an airy Isabella Oliver number (on sale for $204, Isabella Oliver Boutique):

Pair it with some gold statement earrings (maybe these Janna Connors — $58, Max and Chloe) and a big gold cocktail ring (this glitzy yet organic-looking Dara Ettinger piece is uber-cool, $200, Max and Chloe) and you’ll turn heads all night long:

Other club-ready (or yacht-hopping ready) options?  I adore this neon melon-colored Anlo “Felicity” dress ($264, Madison L.A.)  I tried on a similar style at Urban Chic the other week and loveloveloved it.  So flattering with the elasticized, nipped-in waist:

To Miamify it, add some jet black accessories.  I love these Amrita Singh danglers (on sale for 50% off — $50 — at Couture Candy) and this House of Harlow cocktail ring (Nicole Richie’s line!) has been all over the place ($50, Cusp — and you can also get the style in an earring stud):

While on the subject of HOH, these glam glasses are totally on point for a Miami getaway ($125, Kitson):

If you’d like to venture into some eye-catching Miami prints, check out this Alice & Trixie kaleidoscopic print dress ($260, Heery’s):

It’s a heat wave in dress form.  Pair with these awesome $93 Miss KG pumps (available at ASOS):

(The gold accent on the heel stem is just perfect for the South Beach vibe.)  You could go matchy-matchy and add a little neon pink clutch as well ($98, French Connection):

Or just pair with a hard-case gold clutch.  The same accessory guidelines go for these I’m-ready-for-a-good-time asymmetrical dresses — the first by Trina Turk (on sale for $196, Heery’s) and the second by Yoana Baraschi ($370, Sunday Brunch Dress Shop):

You could also go for a slightly more dramatic head-to-toe look with this killer printed maxi dress by Envi (on sale for $112, Heery’s):

I bought a similar Envi maxi from the Bethesda boutique Ginger, had it hemmed, and have had it saved for my birthday (coming up in June!) for a couple of months.  My hairstylist advised me to wear my hair in a flat-ironed, slicked-back ponytail for the night — maybe even adding extensions.  Whew!  Bold, and I like it.  Which may also explain why I’m head over heels for this statement-making Tibi “Sao Paolo” dress ($288 via pre-order, Revolve Clothing):

Love love LOVE.  Amp up your Miami-ready style with a couple of additional add-ons, like the back-in-style Carreras I’ve been going on and on about over the past few weeks:

The neon yellow pair above are $130 and are available at Nordstrom, but I picked up a pair of hot pink ones a few weeks ago and can’t get enough of them.  (I’ve also seen them in bright purple — equally as cool.)  If they look a little too 80s-dated for you, these classic Ray Ban aviators accented in white would also be ideal ($139, Shopbop):

Meanwhile, these “Serrious” Steve Maddens (on sale for $59, Steve Madden) come in a range of day-glo colors (though the white variation might be a kicky-cool option to pair with your neon-featuring wardrobe):

I envision pairing them with a hot pink drapey skirt, like this Kimberly Taylor ($196, Singer22):

The skirt also comes in purple and yellow, but if it’s the pink you’re after, take a look at this similar dress version by Amanda Uprichard ($193, Revolve Clothing):

You’ll turn up the heat instantly!
